A tribute in jewels to one of the world’s truly great hotels, by Margot McKinney.
To mark the 150th anniversary of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, Margot McKinney OAM was invited to create a series of commemorative jewellery pieces inspired by a hotel that has held a deeply personal place in her heart for decades. Drawing upon cherished memories from her many stays, she translated moments of place, atmosphere and emotion into wearable works of art.
The muse lies within the hotel’s iconic lobby: a space defined by soaring ceilings, expansive windows and a sense of warmth and relaxed grandeur. Bell-shaped chandeliers, suspended high above like vines in a tropical jungle, draw the eye and linger in the memory. Reimagined in precious form and elegantly paired with the Mandarin Oriental’s signature fan motif, these lantern forms have been immortalised in a collection of brooches and earrings created exclusively for this milestone anniversary.
